In my view, Eve is far too time intensive in terms of what you have to put in compared to what you get out of it. What I mean is that most games, whether they be normal computer games or MMORPGs, show a lot more progress and return for your efforts compared to this game which I feel does not allow much for casual use.
On the contoary, Eve beautifully lends to casual gaming - you can play anywhere from a hour to half a day, and not log in for days because of IRL things, and nobody minds. "Return from your efforts" isn't the most improtant, there's no "goal" in EvE. And skill training doesn't require grinding, principal reason why I still play it (grinding games mean that you either suck in it due to not grinding, or that they consume too much time and are mind bogglingly boring if you are grinding).

Eve is not really a game you can sit and play for 30 minutes and then do something else. In 30 minutes you can barely move from one area to another, mine a little, buy a new ship or part and go and collect it, check the best prices for a trade etc etc. The game requires big amounts of time for you to see any progress - I do not mean in gaining skills, which thankfully you can do away from the game, I mean in achieving things whilst playing. Because the game takes a lot of input in order to see any output, I find it is a time-stealer.
What's wrong with making small steps? I don't understand what's the problem. For example, for making money (something that most people do in EvE one way or another), you need about half a hour a day, what's not excessive. Output is preety much linearly proportional to input, but that's how it is everywhere.

This bit is serious, but I actually found myself feeling depressed, really, I mean that, after each time I played. I would say to myself that I'll just log on for half an hour, as I have some studying to do, or there is a film I want to watch on the TV, or some reading I want to do. I play for the half an hour and end up playing longer because what I want to achieve still needs doing or because I feel I have achieved nothing in that space of time. I then end up playing for much longer than I intended. When I come off, not only do I then realise that I have hardly made a blind bit of difference to the game or my character (such is the time it takes to do anything) but I have also achieved nothing else i.e. the film has been and gone, the studying didnt get done etc. This leaves me depressed about what a waste of time playing the game has been when I have'nt actually achieved anything worthwhile. Perhaps this is just me.
You should NOT be playing computer games, period. If playing a game ends with you being depressed because you played more then you intended, and yet you couldn't control yourself, then you've got a problem with self-control in general. You shouldn't be playing EvE, or most computer games at all, because you are either obsessive about in-game results which you must maximise (sic!), or you just don't have the self-control to stop playing a game, or both. And, erm, having to watch a movie or so on isn't an obligation - it's just an alternative way of spending free time.

The damage it has done to me is that my wife has not seen much of me while I play and I am a week behind in my studies. I must quit to get my life back - I wonder therefore what the typically hardened Eve gamer is like, computer geek, no partner, overweight, sits alone at the computer most nights, rarely socialises and has few hobbies. Takes sick days of work or school to play and is scruffy, wearin the same clothes days on end - I think this game has a danger of turning you into that if you are not careful
This game has a danger of turning you into that if you're the kind of guy with no self-control or are incapable of prioritising things in life and acting on that. Some people just have addictive personalities
